Workforce Development Board of Contra Costa County

The Workforce Development Board of Contra Costa County (WDBCCC) is issuing a challenge to local business owners and managers: Hire One Paid Intern this Summer.

In response to President Obama and the
Department of Labor's Summer Jobs Plus initiative, the WDBCCC is working in conjunction with Contra Costa County schools and local business to connect young people with rewarding and meaningful internships this summer.

"We're issuing a clear challenge to both large and small businesses," said Tracey Nicks, WDBCCC Business and Economic Development Coordinator."Re-invest in our community by giving our young people the foundation and experience for a long and meaningful career. Businesses who take up the challenge and hire an intern will play an instrumental role in shaping a young person as well as contributing to the economic vitality of Contra Costa County."

This past February, President Obama and the Department of Labor launched the Summer Jobs Plus program, a national call-to-action for businesses, non-profits, and government to provide pathways to employment for low-income and disconnected youth in the summer of 2012. Internships in green technology and health care are high on the list of young people in Contra Costa County.

"Businesses that are unable to hire an intern this summer are being asked to make a charitable contribution of $1,000 to the WDBCCC's Summer Jobs Program. For every $1,000 donated, one young adult will be given an opportunity to gain invaluable experience," said Nicks.

Business owners and managers who are interested in taking up the challenge are encouraged to visit our
website or contact Gina Del Carlo with the WDBCCC at (925) 602-6807.
